 Good morning, children! Winter holidays are over and  we are going to have our English lesson. I hope everything is OK.The topic of our lesson is New Year's Traditions.

  1.  I want to introduce some  new words and word- combinations to you:

  2.  a) Read the text and translate it.

We celebrate the New Year  on the 1st of January. Different people celebrate New Year's Day in different time, have different traditions. But giving presents and sending greetings with good wishes are very popular in all countries."Happy New Year!", "Best wishes for a happy New Year" say or write people to each other.

In Ukraine we celebrate New Year's Day on January 1st. To that  holiday people decorate their flats with the New Year's trees. Children have the New Year's parties at their schools. They sing songs, recite poems, play games and dance around the New Year's Tree.

After the New Year's Day pupils have their winter holidays. Besides we celebrate the Old New Year- on the 14th January.

Christmas in Ukraine

Christmas is the most beloved festival in Ukraine. It is a family holliday. On Christmas Eve the family gather for a holy supper of 12 dishes. Traditionaly the father of the family brings in the "snip". The snip represents the spirit of our forefathers at the holiday table.

The begining of the holy supper is signalled by the first star. Christmas Eve supper starts with a lighting of the candle. The main dish is "kutia", made of honey, popy seeds and wheal kernels. The meal is traditionally meatless and milk free.

The most well-known dishes are holubti, varenyky, pyrohy. After the holly supper children go from house to house singing carrols.
